preface

the 2013 edition of the athens international film festival (opening nights - νύχτες πρεμιέρας) came to an end on sunday, the 29 of september. twelve days full of cinemas, movies (this time I got to see two of them, which is a new personal record), wonderful people, photographs, parties, a sprained ankle that I just had to ignore, two pounds off my body weight and a re-appreciation of how to reach ISO 25.600 or higher and still get decent results.

this time I had the valuable help of two excellent colleagues, mr. vangelis patsialos and miss danai issaris, so I spent less time in the cinemas and more time organizing the daily flow of photographs from the voluntary photographic team which is a part of the festival every year.

this post is a "snapshot" retrospective, in the likes of last year's posts (aiff 2012 snapshots part I and snapshots part II). it is not a complete coverage of the festival. I did not necessarily follow the “official” action around and I wasn't present in every "important" bit (but I did get to photograph Jeremy Irons and Adèle Exarchopoulos). therefore, I consider these photos as snapshots, moments of the festival, the people who associate with it and interesting faces that were present in the festival events.

the photos are set in a chronological order, from the opening night at the pallas theatre until the closing party at pasaji (and the after-closing party at key bar).

missed all the opening acts... I had no idea they would start so early. I almost missed warlord too, since they were set to start at 21:20 and I (literally) ran into the venue at 21:30. thankfully they were a bit late and I got in the photo-pit just a few moments before they came on stage. hadn't done a metal concert in quite some time and I enjoyed this one - metalheads are the most photogenic audience ever.

athens international film festival 2012 - snapshots, part II

preface

...second part of the athens international film festival (opening nights) 2012 - little photostories of each festival day, what I saw and what I chose to photograph. this second part is more streamlined and "official", since I set out to make more images than I was making in the first days. moreover, there were more parties to photograph, and a little non-festival incident which took place on saturday night - a surprise molotov attack on a police station.

the festival's saturday night party was taking place a couple of roads away from the acropolis police station, so when I heard the ruckus I just followed the noises and the burning smell, which led me straight to the police station. there was great commotion, what with policemen trying to keep people away, people trying to walk down the road (it is one of the busiest roads on a saturday night, after all), and the sound of the fire engines' sirens coming up. I managed to snap away a few images, presented in the end of the saturday photostory.

athens international film festival 2012 - snapshots, part I

preface

I have been photographing the athens international film festival (opening nights) for the past four years, but I never posted any images. this year I decided to post some of them. this is not a complete coverage of the festival, since the festival takes place in three cinemas and I cannot be in all of them simultaneously. moreover, there are parties, special screenings and really different lighting among the three venues... therefore, some days are more "fruitful" than others. I do not necessarily follow the "official" action around, thus I consider these photos as snapshots, moments of the festival and the people who associate with it.

the following photographs are little daily stories, a series of images from the first six days of the festival. six more days remain until the end, so this is snapshots part I, and there will be a snapshots part II next monday.

allaboutmusic interview portraits

...some time ago my dear friend Iro Andreou called me up with a proposal - she would start a series of interviews for the music website allaboutmusic.gr and she wanted me to accompany her and document these interviews. all of them were about greek musicians and most of them, due to tight time schedules, would take place during the night. I instantly said yes, firstly because I enjoy working with musicians and secondly because night is my native photographic environment, although I knew I would have forget my beloved analog cameras and stick to digital equipment (which, let's face it, is much better when it comes to darkness). ...and here are the resulting images up until today, namely the following artists: monsieur minimal, marietta fafouti, tilemachos moussas, giorgis christodoulou, simon bloom, marika klambatsea, thanos anestopoulos. you can also check each artist's interview (greek language, couldn't be anything else) in the link under their name.
